Host, MC, compere or toastmaster?

The names overlap, and most events need the same core job: someone who owns the stage, keeps the running order on time and makes the room feel looked after. A master of ceremonies or MC runs a formal programme such as an awards night or gala dinner. A compere is the usual British word for the person linking acts, speakers and awards together. A toastmaster leads the traditions of a formal dinner. An event host covers all of it, and at awards nights and Christmas parties I add live game show rounds so the audience plays rather than watches.
