- New year quiz: questions and answers for a work party or New Year’s Eve
New year quiz: questions and answers for a work party or New Year’s Eve

In short
- This new year quiz has 50 questions with answers, in five rounds of ten, plus a tie-breaker.
- Rounds: world traditions, the UK and Hogmanay, 2026 review of the year, resolutions, and a funny family round.
- Every answer is checked. Anything disputed is left out.
- The 2026 round covers January to October, so add November and December nearer the night.
- Five rounds of ten fit a five-category Quiz Show board, or every guest’s phone.
A quiz earns its place twice in one fortnight. On New Year’s Eve it fills the stretch between dinner and midnight. At a January kick-off it gets people talking again before anyone mentions targets. The questions are written for adults at work, but the last round suits a family New Year’s Eve.

What makes a good new year quiz?
A good new year quiz has one clear answer to every question, mixes half-remembered traditions with surprises, and has a review of the year everyone lived through. That’s the round they argue about on the way home.
- Get the year in review right. A wrong 2026 answer loses the room fast.
- Avoid “currently”, because you might be reading this out in January 2027 and records change.
- Ask what people do at New Year, not why. Much of the folklore is tradition, not record.
- Keep resolutions light. Nobody wants a weigh-in.

Need a second? When England moved New Year’s Day to 1 January, the year before was cut short. How many days did 1751 have? The answer is 282.

How do you run a new year quiz at a January kick-off?
To run a new year quiz at a January kick-off, keep it to three rounds of ten, start with the review of the year and play it straight after lunch. The full five rounds belong at a party.
Straight after lunch is the hardest slot on any conference day. I build deliberate energy peaks into a day for that reason, and twenty minutes of quiz is an easy one.
- Mix departments on every team. Don’t let sales sit with sales.
- Write a round about your own company’s 2026: launches, new starters, the office move. Nobody can look those up.
- Small prizes. The bragging rights do the work.
- On New Year’s Eve, play the tie-breaker by 11.30pm so nobody misses the countdown.
I’ve covered teams and scoring in the guide to a corporate quiz night.
How I run a new year quiz on my own software
At a work quiz, half the room would never call themselves quizzers, and when one person per table holds the pen, the rest drift. So I run it as a show on software I built myself, played at the front, at the tables or on every guest’s phone.
How this quiz plays on the night:
- On a Quiz Show board. Take the best five questions from each round above and you have five categories, easiest at the lowest values. Teams pick a square, race to buzz in and steal the misses.
- On every phone. With Quiz Live, every guest plays on their own phone. Fast and right beats slow and right, and the leaderboard comes up after every question.
- As a knockout. The 2026 round makes a strong round of The Cut: typed answers, no multiple choice to guess from, and the lowest scores cut after each round until one player is left.
