Quiz software for live events

The quiz software behind the show.

Three pieces of software I built myself and run at every event: Quiz Live, the quiz every guest plays on their own phone; Play Along, the engine behind five whole-room rounds; and the big-screen game boards, nine game-show formats in one app. Fourteen games, one control screen, tested with three hundred phones. It is not a tool you sign up for. It is the kit I host with.

Built in-house, not licensed. Written for a room full of people, not a classroom or a meeting.

What it is

Three systems. One host. One screen.

Most quiz hosts run a slideshow, a spreadsheet or someone else’s subscription tool. I built my own, and I built it for the room: fast to join, impossible to break from a phone, and switched from game to game with a tap at the microphone so the energy never drops while a laptop catches up.

The phone quiz

Quiz Live

A live quiz every guest plays on their own phone: four colour answer tiles, a countdown, points for being right and being quick, a leaderboard after every question and a podium at the end. Solo or team mode. The version on this site is the same one I run at events, so you can play a round before you book.

  • Speed scoring: Full marks for fast and right, fewer for slow and right
  • Team mode: Tables or departments on the leaderboard
  • Podium finish: Top three revealed one place at a time

Play Along

The engine behind Common Ground, Who’s Bluffing?, The Final Few, Side Bets and The Cut. Guests join once with the code on their table and their phone follows whichever game is on the big screen. Answers bypass the website entirely and go to a small purpose-built service, which is how three hundred phones can answer in the same second.

  • One code all night: Scan once, play every round
  • Nothing to install: Opens in the phone’s browser
  • Three hundred tested: Answers in well under a second

The game boards

The survey board, the quiz board with picture rounds, the giant playing cards, the conveyor belt and four more, all in one app on one screen. Built to run at a venue: it keeps working if the Wi-Fi drops, the sound is built in, and I switch between games with a tap from a phone in my hand at the microphone.

  • One control screen: Every game switched from the microphone
  • Works offline: The boards keep running if the venue Wi-Fi dies
  • Your logos and photos: In the picture rounds and on the belt

How it holds up

Tested like a room, not a demo.

Before Play Along went near a real event I ran three hundred simulated phones through three full rounds against the live system, all answering inside the same few seconds, the way a real room does when the clock is running.

300phones answering at once, three rounds, every answer counted and nothing lost

All sixteen games

Sixteen games. One host. One screen.

Five rounds the whole room plays on their phones, nine big-screen games with teams at the board, and two that need no screen at all: a phone on a forehead, and a coin. The screen games are all my own software, run from one screen, so I can switch format the moment the room needs a lift. Tap any game to see exactly how it plays.

Almost all of these can be played as a show, at the tables or on the app, and the questions are written around your company before the night. Not sure which mix suits your event? Tell me the room and I will suggest a running order.

Three ways to play

Three ways to play every game.

Every game I run can be played three ways, and I pick the way that suits the room, the timings and the layout on the night: as a show at the front, table against table, or with every single guest playing on their own phone. Mix them across an evening and nobody spends the night watching.

As a show

Teams at the front, the room roaring them on

The television format. Two teams come up to the board for the survey game, the giant cards or the conveyor belt, and the rest of the room shouts the answers, groans at the strikes and bets on the outcome. I rotate the players every round so as many people as possible get a turn at the front, and nobody is up there long enough to get nervous.

Best for: awards nights and gala dinners

At the tables

Every table is a team

The whole room plays at once, table against table. The quiz board is played from the tables, higher or lower is called table by table, and the phone rounds are answered as one table with one phone. Scores go on the leaderboard by table, so the rivalry is between the people who are already sitting together.

Best for: conference dinners and Christmas parties with set tables

On the app

Every guest on their own phone

Play Along. Guests scan the code on their table and every round lands on every phone at the same moment: votes, bluffs, knockouts and bets. Individual scores, grouped by table on the big screen. Nothing to download, and it has been tested with three hundred phones playing at once.

Best for: whole-company nights where nobody should be watching

Built for the room

Same games. Two very different rooms.

I customise every game I play for the audience in front of me: the questions, the answers and the style I present them in. A survey round for a room of graduates in their twenties is a completely different show from the same round for a board of chief executives, and it should be. I write for the people who will actually be there, and on the night I speak into the listening: I read what the room gives back and change gear to match it. Eight hundred events means I have hosted every kind of room, so if a different crowd turns up from the one on the brief, the style changes on the spot and often the questions do too.

Graduate intake, average age 24

Fast, loud and about them

The games I would pick
Common Ground to open, Who’s Bluffing? once they are warm, The Cut after dinner and Side Bets running all night. Quick rounds, lots of them.
The questions
Written around their year, their in-jokes and the things nobody says in front of the managers. Sharp, clean and quick to read on a phone.
How I host it
Pace and mischief. I chase the split votes, name the brave ones and keep the whole room playing rather than a few people at the front.
Board and senior leadership

Same games, a different show

The games I would pick
The survey game with the directors on the panel, Who’s Bluffing? with stories from their own careers, and The Final Few for the nerve it takes to play it safe in front of your peers.
The questions
Drawn from the strategy, the industry and the year the business has actually had. Fewer of them, with more room to talk about the answer.
How I host it
Slower, drier, and I let the silences work. A leadership team discovering where it genuinely agrees is worth more than another round.

1Written for your people

Send me the year’s stories, the in-jokes, the departments and the industry. The rounds are built from them, so the answers land in a way no off-the-shelf pack ever can.

2Speaking into the listening

The words on the screen are half of it. How I present them is the rest, and I pitch the pace, the teasing and the tone to the room that has turned up, not the one on the brief.

3If a different crowd turns up

Eight hundred events across festivals, awards, conferences and dinners means I have hosted every kind of room. If the mood is not what anyone expected, I change the style on the spot, and often the questions too.

For the venue and IT

Nothing to install. Nothing to worry about.

  • Guests play in their phone’s browser. No app store, no account, no personal data beyond a first name and a table.
  • Phone games run on the venue’s Wi-Fi or on 4G. The big-screen boards keep working with no connection at all.
  • One HDMI screen or projector and a sound system from the venue. I bring everything else and run it from the front.
  • Questions, timers, team mode and your branding are set up around your event before the night starts.

Good to know

Quiz software FAQs.

Is your quiz software something we can use ourselves, or do you run it?

I run it. Quiz Live, Play Along and the game boards are not self-serve tools you log into. I build the rounds around your event and operate everything live from the room, the same as any other hosted entertainment.

Is there a free version we can try?

Yes. There is a live, playable version of Quiz Live online, the same one used at events, and a demo of the survey board. Open either on your phone and play a round. Running them at your event is part of a booking.

Do guests need to download an app?

No. Guests join in their phone’s browser by scanning a code or typing it in. No account, no app store and no personal data beyond a first name and a table.

How many players can the software handle?

The Play Along engine has been load-tested with three hundred phones answering at once across three rounds with no errors and no lost answers, and answers came back in well under a second. That comfortably covers a large conference room or a company Christmas party.

What happens if the venue Wi-Fi is poor?

The phone games run on the venue’s Wi-Fi or on 4G, whichever the guest’s phone has. The big-screen boards keep working with no connection at all, so a Wi-Fi drop never takes the show down.

Can the questions be about our company?

Yes, for every game. I write rounds around your business, your people and your industry, and I can drop your logos, products or photos in as picture questions or prizes on the belt.

Which TV shows are the games based on?

The nine big-screen games take their shape from the formats everyone knows: the survey board, the higher-or-lower cards, the conveyor belt, the letter board. The five phone rounds are my own original games, built for a whole room rather than a studio. All of it is my own software, written for live events.
