Film quiz questions with answers: rounds for every kind of film fan

Kevin Durham: themed corporate event with a DeLorean prop car

In short

  • Here are 57 film quiz questions with answers, in seven rounds: decades, the Oscars, box office, famous quotes, horror, Christmas films, and film and TV.
  • I’ve checked every answer against a source and left out anything still argued over.
  • Box office records move, so I’ve worded the money questions to stay true, and dated the ones that could change.
  • Read the quotes out rather than playing clips, unless the venue has the right screening licence.
  • Finish on a tie-breaker with a number for an answer, so nobody shares first place.

Film quiz questions are the safest bet in any quiz, because almost everyone watches films even if they never set foot in a pub quiz. UK cinemas recorded 123.5 million admissions in 2025, and that’s before anyone counts the sofa.

I’ve written the rounds below for a work social, a charity night or a pub. There’s one for the classics crowd, one for the Oscar watchers, one for the people who only know the quotes, and two seasonal rounds for horror fans and Christmas. Film is close to home for me. Before I hosted events I was a TV presenter for Fox, Warner and Universal, interviewing stars including Will Ferrell, Tom Hardy and Reese Witherspoon.

What makes good film quiz questions?

Good film quiz questions have one clear answer and give everyone a fair shot at guessing it. Mix easy with hard: a room of casual viewers needs plenty of “I know this one” moments, and the table that watches everything needs a few that make them work.

  • Give the year in the question. It helps the guessers and stops arguments about remakes.
  • Ask about the film, not the trivia behind it. “Who played Vito Corleone?” beats “Who was first choice for the part?”
  • Leave out anything still in dispute, such as “the highest-grossing film ever”, which has changed hands more than once.
  • Read each question aloud before the night. Trip over a title and so will the room.

Film quiz questions by decade

Box office film quiz questions

Box office questions sound dry on paper and start the loudest arguments in the room. Records move, so I’ve worded these to stay true. Where a record could change, I’ve dated it: I checked the figures against the list of highest-grossing films in October 2026.

  1. Which was the first film to take $1 billion worldwide? Answer: Titanic).
  2. Adjusted for inflation), which 1939 film is still the highest-grossing in history? Answer: Gone with the Wind.
  3. Which 2019 film became the first sequel to hold the record as the highest-grossing film of all time? Answer: Avengers: Endgame.

  7. As of October 2026, which 2025 Chinese film is the highest-grossing animated film ever? Answer: Ne Zha 2.
  8. Which Bond film has taken the most at the UK box office? Answer: Skyfall (2012), with £97.6 million.

What are good film quote questions for a pub quiz?

The best pub quiz film questions are often the quotes, because people know the line long after they have forgotten the plot. Read the line out, then ask for the film. All eight are on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest film quotes.

  1. “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Answer: Casablanca (1942).
  2. “There’s no place like home.” Answer: The Wizard of Oz (1939).
  3. “May the Force be with you.” Answer: Star Wars (1977).
  4. “I’ll be back.” Answer: The Terminator (1984).
  5. “Bond. James Bond.” Which actor said it first, and in which film? Answer: Sean Connery, in Dr. No (1962).
  6. “Houston, we have a problem.” Answer: Apollo 13 (1995).
  7. “E.T. phone home.” Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).
  8. “I see dead people.” Answer: The Sixth Sense (1999).

Film clips are another matter. UK copyright law requires an organisation showing films or TV on its premises to hold the right licence, so read the lines out unless the venue already has that covered.

What are some horror film quiz questions and answers?

Good horror film quiz questions stick to the famous monsters and the big names rather than the gore, so the whole table can join in. I’ve kept clear of the usual Halloween picks. No Michael Myers, no Shining, so this round sits happily next to a Halloween one.

  1. In Psycho (1960), what is the name of the motel where Marion Crane stops? Answer: the Bates Motel.
  2. Which future Pirates of the Caribbean star made his film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)? Answer: Johnny Depp.
  3. In Alien (1979), what is the name of the ship? Answer: the Nostromo.
  4. Which 1999 found-footage film follows three students into the woods of Maryland? Answer: The Blair Witch Project.
  5. Which British director made 28 Days Later (2002)? Answer: Danny Boyle.
  6. In It (2017), what does the clown call himself? Answer: Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
  7. Who wrote and directed Get Out (2017), winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay? Answer: Jordan Peele.
  8. Which 1991 horror thriller is one of only three films to win the “Big Five” Oscars? Answer: The Silence of the Lambs.

What are the best Christmas film quiz questions and answers?

The best Christmas film quiz questions and answers come from the films people watch every December without fail. Save them for the December party.

  1. In Home Alone (1990), what is Kevin’s surname? Answer: McCallister.
  2. Who plays Buddy in Elf (2003)? Answer: Will Ferrell.
  3. In Love Actually (2003), what is Hugh Grant’s job? Answer: Prime Minister.
  4. What is the name of the Los Angeles skyscraper in Die Hard (1988)? Answer: Nakatomi Plaza. Whether it counts as a Christmas film is an argument for another night.
  5. In It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), what is the name of George Bailey’s guardian angel? Answer: Clarence (Clarence Odbody).
  6. Who plays Ebenezer Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)? Answer: Michael Caine.
  7. Which 1947 film features a department store Santa who claims to be the real one? Answer: Miracle on 34th Street.
  8. What is the one song in The Snowman (1982), the film with no dialogue? Answer: “Walking in the Air”.

How do you add film and TV quiz questions?

To turn this into a film and TV quiz, add a crossover round: questions about the people who move between the two. It catches out the table that only watches box sets.

  1. Which Game of Thrones star played Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)? Answer: Emilia Clarke.
  2. The creator of Downton Abbey won an Oscar for writing Gosford Park (2001). Who is he? Answer: Julian Fellowes.
  3. Which Breaking Bad character is the star of the film El Camino (2019)? Answer: Jesse Pinkman.
  4. Which Fleabag creator co-wrote the Bond film No Time to Die (2021)? Answer: Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
  5. Which Mr Bean star played the title role in Johnny English (2003)? Answer: Rowan Atkinson.

What is a good film quiz tie-breaker?

A good tie-breaker has a number for an answer, so the closest team wins outright. Try this one: No Time to Die (2021) is which number in the official Eon Productions Bond series? The answer is 25.

Need a second? Ask how many cinema admissions the UK recorded in 2025. The answer is 123.5 million.

How I run a film quiz on my own software

A film round read from a sheet works in a pub. A work quiz needs more, because plenty of the room would never call themselves quizzers, and the minute one person on each table takes the pen, the rest drift off. I run my quizzes as a show, on software I built myself, and every game can be played at the front, at the tables or on every guest’s phone.

A Quiz Live question on a guest's phone, with four coloured answer tiles and a countdown
Here is how these rounds play on the night:

  • On a Quiz Show board. Five categories, five values each. Take the best five from the decades, Oscars, horror and Christmas rounds, put the easy ones at the low values, and let teams buzz in and steal each other’s misses.
  • On every phone. Quiz Live gives every guest four answer tiles and a countdown, with points for being right and being quick. The box office round works well here as multiple choice, because nobody knows the numbers but everyone has a hunch.
  • As a knockout. The Cut is the quotes round’s natural home: typed answers, no options to guess from, and the lowest scores cut until one film buff is left.

The Cut on the big screen: round four, 50 players left and playing down to 25
And because I write the questions for the people in the room, a film quiz can carry a round about your own company’s favourite films too.

Nobody remembers a normal night.
